...with excitement and the good kind of nervousness.
My title, "The Inner 'I' " is, of course, a pun - not a great one, I admit, but it makes sense to me in several ways. My name is Ilene London, and the personal symbol I use most often is the 'eye', which is both a pun on my nickname "I", and a reference to 'how I see things'. Seeing, naming, describing, and telling, with integrity and my own personal truth, is part of the core of who I am (inner 'I' - not too subtle, huh?) As an identical twin who grew up in a family where euphemism and blurred boundaries often prevailed, being faithful to what I see and know is essential for me. My personal observations, feelings, and knowledge may sometimes seem 'quirky' and unexpected to others, may appear too 'deep' or 'intense', but they are mine and I must honor them. At age 58, I am still learning at times how to do this.
As a representation of commitment to my internal perceptions, I use the 'eye' when I sign my artwork -- at this time, small hand-made art quilts using contemporary embroidery, hand-quilting, fibers and handspun yarn, beads, paint, and other surface design techniques.
About the main image at the top of my blog (behind the title): This was a paper doll I made for my first project in a class on Transformative Doll-Making with Pamela Hastings at joggles.com. The theme is transformation (where would we like to be? where are we going?) but like the Garden Icon Doll you'll see in a later post, gardening plays a big role too. Look for the garden-related objects and charms, and the snippets of text on her body. The pattern is a slight variation of a doll pattern provided by Pamela Hastings for the class.

Hi, I! Can't wait to read more.
Signed, A Kindred Spirit
Hi I,
I love this. I have had the honor of being your close friend since 1993 (I have the card from you to prove it, heeheehee) and yet I did not realize the deeper meaning of the eye. I am thrilled hearing you express yourself this way. Thanks for sending me the link.
much love,
M
