David and I highly recommend the Koolwink Motel - a family-run place in Romney, West Virginia that used to be a tourist home in the 40's and expanded to a motel. We stayed there for a few nights last week. The reason for its unusual name is the cool mountain breeze you got back then when you opened the windows at night (no A/C), which enabled you to get '40 winks'! The motel's name inspired David to give me a series of 'kool' winks in the days preceding the trip, as well as during our stay. But he did all the driving in the beautiful mountains, so he was entitled.
Our room was up on a wooded hillside near the original house, and from our balcony we felt like we were in the trees. When it rained we sat out there and got wonderfully cool breezes - but unlike in the 40's, the windows don't open so inside we used A/C. The perfectly clean, large room also had also a microwave, coffee (!), and fridge, plus the most comfortable lounge chair that was so deep David had to help me out of it.
A historical note: Romney changed hands 56 times during the Civil War, twice in one day.
